A neighborhood organization sharing history and advocating for Black & Indigenous Liberation.
Established in 2024.
York Collective designs a sense of place through collaborative programming and advocacy rooted in the principles of Black & Indigenous Liberation.
Our mission is embodied in the York Urban Village (YUV), an innovative project in Portland’s York District. YUV honors Black history and its connections to regional tribal histories while addressing systemic displacement, erasure, and inequity.
Our key issues and areas include urban displacement, placemaking, wealth generation, memory activism, ecological stewardship, and racial health disparities. The York Collective addresses the systemic displacement, socioeconomic disenfranchisement, and historical erasure of Black and Indigenous communities in Portland.
The York Collective is deeply rooted in the intersecting struggles for Black Liberation and Indigenous Sovereignty. We recognize that both movements are fundamentally about land, self-determination, economic justice, and the right to thrive in one’s own community. Our role in these movements is to build community-led solutions that resist displacement, reclaim history, and create long-term economic and cultural sustainability.
